On this page you can download three medieval ornaments in the English romanesque style which are intended to decorate square surface areas.

We found them in an old book dealing with the history of ornament drawing styles, and, as stated in the book, these are examples of English Romanesque ornaments. The first ornament was taken from a picture, and the caption beneath it read ‘romanesque tile’. The second and third ornament often appear in books whose themes deal with historical decorating styles. In these books these ornaments were described to belong to the Late-Romanesque tiles (originally yellow and red) from the church in Bloxham (13th century).

Romanesque art refers to medieval art between the 10th and approx. 12th century, i.e,  the rise of Gothic art. It originated in Italy inspired by the art of Ancient Rome, and can be seen most often in architecture, decorative art and painting. Romanesque style was spread by the Catholic Church, which at the time was the dominant landowner and thus had the money to build impressive churches. Hence the Romanesque style became the first Pan-European artistic style which expanded throughout the entire Catholic Europe.

All three ornaments are square-shaped and symmetrical.
