Some three years since, (1873) the establishment now known as the KITTREDGE CORNICE & ORNAMENT CO., then working under the name of Kittredge, Clark & Co., published a pamphlet of about seventy-five pages, called the “Manual of Sheet Metal Architectural Work” comprising, in a brief and somewhat crude shape, a system of price lists and estimates, for the use of the trade. During the past two years there has been published a monthly trade journal known as the Sheet-Metal Builder, m which, from time to time, tables, formulas and estimates have been introduced. The scheme of business for which the Kittredge Cornice & Ornament Co. was organized and equipped, is the manufacture in a wholesale way, of what has heretofore been made only in a retail way. It proposes to do for the tinner and cornice-worker what a planing mill does for the carpenter and builder. The great difficulties presented, upon this plan of operation, have been the lack of technical information upon the part of the trade, and the absence in the small business, as heretofore conducted, of an intelligent and reliable plan of prices and construction. The publication of the "Manual" above referred to was the first effort to bring before the trade a system of prices and estimates, and a comprehensive view of the scheme of business which it was proposed to operate upon. The work commenced in that little pamphlet has since been continued in the columns of the Sheet-Metal Builder. The volume herewith presented is only a better and more comprehensive presentation of the entire subject, gotten up in the light of greater knowledge of the wants and necessities of the trade, and with the advantage of larger experience.
While asserting that the "Manual" was crude in material and arrangement, we would not be understood as considering the present volume entirely perfect, or even so complete in its topics that very much valuable matter cannot be added to it in future editions. We fully appreciate the many defects that exist in it and its numerous short comings. Some serious errors have crept into it^ owing in part to hasty preparation and publication, to insure its readiness for trade use the present season. As it is, it is offered to the trade in the sincere hope of its being useful to all, not only to the customers and patrons of the KITTREDGE CORNICE & ORNAMENT CO., but also to the retail manufacturers of the country.
