This is actually a Greek antefix (a vertical block which terminates the covering tiles of a tiled roof). It is a rectangular ornament, but it can be used as a band ornament as well.

Since the ornament consists of ancient Greek motifs arranged horizontally next to each other, it is suitable for making friezes, i.e. rectangular surfaces of any length. The ornament consists of a lotus flower, a conventionalized palmette and acanthus leaves in the form of scrolls. This kind of ornament was common architectural decoration in Ancient Rome, and there are many variations that can be found in books dealing with the subject.
