In ZoneAlarm, program access is controlled by way of "zones", into which all network connections are divided. The "trusted zone" generally includes the user's local area network and can share resources such as files and printers, while the "Internet zone" includes everything not in the trusted zone. The user can specify which "permissions" (trusted zone client, trusted zone server, Internet zone client, Internet zone server) to give to a program before it attempts to access the Internet (e.g. before running it for the first time) or, alternatively, ZoneAlarm will ask the user to give the program permission on its first access attempt.

Spybot - Search & Destroy is a popular malware, spyware and adware removal program which works on Microsoft Windows 95 and later. Like most malware scanners, Spybot-S&D scans the computer hard disk and/or RAM for malicious software. Spybot-S&D also recently added an anti-rootkit function. Another tool included in Spybot is a file shredder, for the secure deletion of files. Spybot is not intended to replace anti-virus programs, but it does detect some common trojans.
Spybot was written by the German software engineer Patrick Michael Kolla, and is distributed by Kolla's Irish company Safer Networking Limited. Development began in 2000 when Kolla, still a student, wrote a small program to deal with the Aureate/Radiate and Conducent TimeSink

BitDefender is an antivirus software suite developed by Bucharest-based software company SOFTWIN. It was launched in November 2001. Home editions support Microsoft Windows, Symbian OS and Windows Mobile. A free basic online scan is offered via the BitDefender website. Older versions of BitDefender are made available for free download when newer versions are released. The first version which was made freely available was version 8. As of November 2007, version 10 of BitDefender is freely available for download. Unlike the commercial version, the free version only offers an on-demand virus scan, and doesn't provide real time scanning, and may therefore, be less suitable for machines with continuous connection to the internet. Avast! Home Edition is a popular full-featured freeware anti-virus applications available to Microsoft Windows and Linux users. As of July, 2008 it has had over 25 million downloads on Download.com. As of March 7, 2008 Avast! (Home version) has had 60 million registered users.
Avast! is aimed at preventing several types of computer threats, including those that are not technically computer viruses such as spyware and even rogue anti-spyware, and can also make a virus Recovery DataBase which is used to recover files when they are infected (instead of deleting them).

The virus chest is quarantine folder where "infected files" can be stored. The chest causes the files' usage to be disabled and is meant to prevent them from causing any harm. The virus chest also stores vital system files to prevent them from virus damage. They still can be run, but the access to the file by any source or other program is blocked until it is removed from the chest.
Registration
Avast! needs to be registered within the first 60 days of use. After registering, a license key is e-mailed and can be used for only one year. After one year, the user is required to re-register. Despite registration, the program is still free for home use.
