On this page, I will post video tutorials that demonstrate modeling methods typical for CAD Reverse Engineering.
CAD Reverse engineering is the process of converting a material object into a 3D model. In practice, this process consists of:
scanning the object with a laser to obtain a cloud of points representing the shape of the object,
point cloud refinement and processing,
converting a cloud of points into a CAD 3D model (surface or solid).
Reverse engineering serves to recreate a lost or unavailable form of a product. It is most often used when it is necessary to recreate an old part or assembly, analyze competitors' products,...
Within FreeCAD there are two workbenches that are responsible for Reverse engineering (Reverse Engineering workbench and Points workbench), but they are only at the beginning of their development, so they have very few functions. That's why I decided to put in this category video tutorials showing manual methods of reverse engineering in FreeCAD. These will mostly be 3D CAD modeling methods based on point clouds or reference images (orthogonal images).
In this category I will also place video tutorials showing how point clouds can be imported into FreeCAD. For now, FreeCAD has built-in translators for importing and exporting asc, pcd, ply and e57 file formats.
I have grouped the tutorials into the following subcategories:
