With this free woodworking plan you can make a Stacking and sorting toy, one of the most popular wooden toys on the market.

The toy is made from wood and consists of five different geometric shapes (4 pieces made of each shape) and a board on which the shapes are stacked together according to shape, color and number of holes in the middle of each piece (pieces of the same geometric shapes are painted the same color and have the same number of holes). The point of this stacking and sorting toy is that the children (toddlers and preschoolers) become inspired to build early shape, color and number differentiation skills.

You can make this stacking toy from scrap wood left over in the workshop from your previous projects. You won’t need any advanced woodworking skills, and the whole toy can be created with essential tools found in anybody’s home (drill machine, hand saw, sandpaper...).

You can paint the toy pieces with some child-safe finish to guarantee that there are no harmful substances. If you want to avoid using the finish, make each geometric shape from different type of wood to differentiate the color. Today, shape stacker toys like this one can be bought at literally every toy store, which only confirms the fact that they are popular simply because the kids enjoy playing with them. If you have some basic skills which are required and generally love DIY projects, this toy is ideal for you to make it. Not to mention that wooden toys are not cheap, either, as prices get much higher for every product labeled with prefixes such as ‘eco-friendly’, ‘all natural’ and the like.
