Here you can download six 3D models of turned mallets. If you need dimensions to make these mallets, just open them in FreeCAD and look at the sketches.

Five models consist of only one piece, and one model consists of two separate pieces - a head and a handle. Mallets are a special type of hammer in which the head is relatively large and usually made of wood or rubber, i.e., of a material softer than steel. The striking faces are much bigger with a mallet than with an ordinary hammer. The mallet is a hammer used in jobs where high impact force is not required and where it is necessary to avoid damaging the impact surface. When working with wood, mallets are most often used to knock wooden pieces together, to drive chisels or dowels, etc. If a mallet is made from wood, then hardwood must be used. Actually, we’re not going to teach you here how to make a carver’s mallet on a lathe because the experienced ones don’t need it, and those who do need it know that there’s a lot of materials on the Internet and in books to learn from.

We came across these 6 models all by chance and then modeled them in 3D CAD software. Today, turned mallets can be found less and less in workshops, because craftsmen usually buy very cheap industrially made mallets, which usually have a handle made of wood and a head made of hard rubber or plastic. In our opinion, money and time are not everything there is. Every self-respecting woodturner who values his craft, lathe and workshop should make several such mallets and use them in the workshop, and thus send a message to his customers that he loves and enjoys his work, as he equally enjoys making the ordered item for the customer.
