The compass rose is an indicator of geographic directions, i.e., a graphic representation of geographic directions on maps, nautical charts, compasses or some other objects. Except for giving the orientation of the cardinal (north, east, south, and west) and intermediate directions (northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest ), the compass rose often displays secondary intercardinal directions (north-northeast, north-northwest, south-southeast …) as well. The compass rose has been a very common graphic element on coats of arms, various emblems, logos, maps etc.
