This pattern has been taken from an old book dealing with history of art and architecture. The pattern is well-drawn in 2D CAD software and all you need to do is just scale it to the desired size and then color it to your liking. This is actually an interlaced square pattern with 4 loops on the corners, created in stencil technique.
