Soldier Schweik (also spelled Švejk (original, Czech language), Schweik, Shveyk or Schwejk) is the main character in the satirical novel “The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik During the World War” written by Jaroslav Hašek. On the surface, you may get the impression that the book is easy and funny to read and, as such, meant for broad masses. If you look deeper, however, through different caricatures, i.e., dramatized characters, you can see the relations that once ruled in the disintegrating Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the ridicule of militarism and imperialism in Europe during World War I. Hašek is facing us with an absurd picture of the time, full of human folly, in which Soldier Schweik, proclaimed as a person of lower intelligence, is often the person with the most sensible opinion. “The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik” is the most famous and most translated novel of Czech literature, and one of the first anti-war novels in the world.
